Forschungszentrum Jülich - Annual Report 2011

Annual Report 2011 | Forschungszentrum Jülich 1111 Foundation of Nanoelectronics Laboratory 2 September 2011 | On campus at Forschungszentrum Jül- ich, the foundation has been laid for one of the most mod- ern nanoelectronics laboratories in Europe. A total of around €25 million will be invested in the project. The Helmholtz Nanoelectronic Facility with a cleanroom area of around 1,000 m2 will allow researchers to develop new materials, processes and structures on a nanometre scale and thus render new sensors, processors and memories feasible in the future. Deep Insights 23 September 2011 | Electronic states determine many of the physical properties of solids. An international team of researchers including scientists from Jülich has successfully refined photoemission spectroscopy, making it possible not only to visualize electronic states on the surface of a mate- rial but also those at a greater depth. In Nature Materials, an independent expert confirmed that the method has consid- erable potential for materials science. Guest from Brussels 23 September 2011 | Approximately four months before being elected President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz visited Forschungszentrum Jülich, which as one of the largest research centres in Europe drives numerous EU pro- jects forward and supports them. He learnt about brain re- search, research on the bioeconomy and how powerful the Jülich supercomputers actually are. Focus on Bioeconomy 12 September 2011 | NRW Science Minister Svenja Schulze, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Research Min- istry Thomas Rachel and Dr. Alfredo Aguilar from the Euro- pean Commission’s Directorate-General for Research & In- novation attended an event in Jülich officially launching the Bioeconomy Science Center. RWTH Aachen University, the universities of Bonn and Düsseldorf, and Forschungszen- trum Jülich conduct research in this network on the main topics associated with a sustainable economy based on re- newable raw materials.
