Forschungszentrum Jülich - Annual Report 2011

Forschungszentrum Jülich | Annual Report 201140 The supercomputers in the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) JUGENE Relative numbers according to users JUROPA The Jülich supercomputers are used extensively by users outside Forschungszentrum Jülich. The computing time is allocated by independent science committees. GCS: Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (association of the three national supercomputing centres JSC, HLRS and LRZ) NIC: John von Neumann Institute for Computing (national allocation body, funded by the three Helmholtz Centres FZJ, DESY, GSI) GRS: German Research School for Simulation Sciences PRACE: Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (European HPC infrastructure) DEISA: Distributed European Infrastructure for Supercomput- ing Applications (European HPC infrastructure, forerunner of PRACE) User statistics In 2011, 2 billionprocessor core hours were allocated on JUGENE, and almost 125 millionon JUROPA (whereby the JUROPA pro- cessors are more powerful than the JUGENE processors). Coveted computing time – Overbooking factor JUGENE 4 JUROPA 7 In 2011, within the framework of the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE), nineteen European projects were calculated on JUGENE. Most of the computing time – 39 % – was assigned to basic physics research, followed by the research area of en- gineering and energy with 23 %. The Jülich Supercomputing Centre oper- ates supercomputers of the highest per- formance class in Europe. It provides scientists and engineers at Forschungs- zentrum Jülich, universities and re- search institutions both in Germany and throughout Europe as well as companies in the commercial sector with access to computing capacity to assist them in solving highly complex problems using simulation calculations. External users work closely with JSC employees. The John von Neumann Institute for Comput- ing is responsible for the scientific eval- uation of projects.
